Where does verity come from?
The smiley face character of Verity, and the series in which it appears, was created by YouTuber ThatMob. The character was popularized further by a song released in July of 2026 called “It’s Me, It’s Verity” (by YouTuber Horror Skunx) and subsequently went viral, being used and remixed in countless videos on social media.
The word verity dates back to the 14th century and has several meanings (which are unrelated to the meme), including “the quality or state of being true or real.”
How is verity used?
The verity meme is often referred to as brainrot, defined as “shallow or addictive online content.”
Mr Lindsay noted that any yellow smiley face is “basically now Verity” – so you might hear reference to that when they see an emoji, for instance, or they might be drawing the face on things, or adding it to images using AI. Kids are also now apparently putting the suffix “ity” (as in, the end of Verity) on the end of other words. “So, you love something – lovity. You’re mad – you’re madity,” explained the teacher.
